On 11th April, 1916, the 12th Rifle Brigade battalion of 60 Brigade, 20th Division moved into the front line in the Ypres salient. On 14th April, six members of the battalion were killed in action and another two wounded, yet the Battalion Diary recorded it as being a very quiet day. It goes on to say that at 6.40 pm there was a trench mortar and artillery operation on the enemy lines opposite them directed at their bombing posts. Apparently this was very successful as large quantities of sandbags and timber were seen hurtling skyward. The German response to this was feeble, most of it falling behind the trench line held by 12th Rifle Brigade. Feeble it may have been but it accounted for the death of these men one of whom was Henry Apted, who probably did not consider it to be a very quiet day.
